Which shape do you need?

A holdall or duffle carries more awkward loads and packs flat when empty, but it hangs off one shoulder or swings from handles, so it suits transport rather than distance. See holdalls and duffle bags.

A shoulder or sling bag keeps a small load to hand without taking a pack off. Good for documents, a tablet and the things you reach for often. See shoulder bags and sling bags.

A dry bag is not a carrying system at all, it is a sealed liner. Most people use one inside a rucksack rather than instead of it. See dry bags.

Reading the capacity figure

Capacities here run from 20 to 100 litres. On packs of this type the figure generally counts the main compartment together with the outer pockets, so treat it as a guide to what the bag swallows overall rather than a measured volume. Where a maker gives outer dimensions or an empty weight, they are on the product page. Where a figure is missing we leave it out rather than invent one.

A word on the big capacities: a 90 or 100 litre pack is easy to fill until it weighs more than you want to carry all day. Buy for the load you actually take, not the load you might.

What the fabrics do, and what they do not

The coated fabrics used across this range shed rain and resist ground damp, but the seams and zips are not sealed, so treat them as water-resistant rather than waterproof. In sustained rain, line the main compartment with a dry bag and keep your sleeping bag and spare clothing inside it. That habit costs almost nothing and works whatever the bag claims.
