  Four bags, or one

  Take both side pouches and the waist pack off and you are left with a plain main compartment for a day walk. Clip them back on for a weekend. The waist pack alone carries a phone, wallet and keys around a campsite once the rest is pitched, which is the part most modular bags leave out.

  Where the strain lands

  On the belt anchor points and the top of the shoulder straps, since that is where the load hangs. Set the belt on the top of your hips rather than your waist, keep dense items high and against your back, and pack the side pouches light: weight hung out to the sides pulls your shoulders back and works the seams.
