  The main compartment opens right out, so you see the whole load at once instead of digging down a tube. That suits a work shift, a day on a hill or a night away with a light sleeping bag. Small items live in the second pocket and the smaller compartments, where they stay findable.

  Where a 30 L pack complains

  The waist strap is a buckle strap, not a padded belt: it stops the bag swinging, it does not move weight onto your hips. Your shoulders carry it, so keep dense items high and against your back. The full-width opening is the other weak point, since an overpacked bag makes you force the zip round the corners.
