  What the straps actually do

  The waist strap here pulls the pack against your torso. It is webbing, not a padded belt sitting on your hip bones, so it steadies the load rather than carrying it, and your shoulders still take the weight. The chest strap stops the shoulder straps sliding outwards. The back panel is a breathable pad resting against you rather than mesh suspended off a frame, so it sits close and vents a little. No empty weight is given.

  Compression matters more than capacity

  Four straps, two at the sides and two underneath, pull a part-filled 45 L back into shape so the contents stop rolling about behind you. MOLLE webbing outside takes a pouch, though anything hung there sits further from your back. Load dense items high, cinch before you lift, and never force a zip shut.
