Four gravity systems here. You fill a reservoir, hang it up, and the weight of the water pushes it through the filter while you do something else. No pumping, no squeezing, no batteries. These are new, unbranded systems, described from the maker's specification.

What these filters do, and what they do not

These use hollow-fibre membranes, typically 0.01 micron. That stops bacteria and protozoa, which is the risk from a hill stream, a farm-runoff beck or a tap you would rather not trust. Three things it does not do, and all three are worth knowing before you buy: it does not remove viruses, which is the line between a filter and a purifier; it does not soften water or reduce limescale, so it will not fix a kettle in a hard-water area; and it is not a treatment for water you have been told to boil. Where a genuine viral risk exists, chemical treatment or boiling goes on top.

Why gravity rather than a squeeze filter

A squeeze filter is faster in the hand. A gravity system is faster over an evening, because it runs unattended while you pitch a tent, and it suits a group better than any bottle since one hang fills everyone's containers. The trade is patience and something to hang it from.

Hang it somewhere that will hold it

Three or four litres of water weighs three or four kilos. Where a maker rates the strap, that figure is on the listing. Use the branch, not the twig.

Three things that end a filter early

Light and standing water grow algae in a translucent reservoir, which turns it green and slows the flow long before the rated life is up: empty it, rinse it, store it dry and out of the sun. Frost is worse, because water left in the fibres and frozen splits them, and a split membrane stops filtering while flowing exactly as before. And flow dropping off usually means a loaded filter rather than a finished one, so rinse or backflush before replacing. The cartridge is a consumable on every system here, and we do not stock replacements, so check availability before you commit.

Returns or exchange within 30 days of delivery, unused and in original condition, approved before being sent back, with the refund issued within 7 days of acceptance.
