  What 50 litres holds

  Fifty litres is the working size for two or three nights away. A sleeping bag, a rolled mat, a stove, spare clothing and two days of food fit with room left at the top. The MOLLE webbing moves bulk outside the main sack, so hang light items there and keep dense weight inside.

  Where a loaded bergen gives way

  Three points take the strain: the belt anchor, the top of the shoulder straps and any zip pulled across an overstuffed pocket. Pack the heavy items high and close to your back, seat the belt on the top of your hips, and ease a zip shut rather than forcing it. Oxford fabric resists spray, but the seams and zips are not sealed, so line the sack with a dry bag if your sleeping bag must stay dry.
