  What fits in 21 by 17 by 8 cm

  A folded map, gloves, a head torch, a snack and a small first aid tin, or the loose items that otherwise sink to the bottom of a rucksack. Mounted on the outside of a pack it keeps them in reach without opening the main compartment, and it folds flat once emptied.

  Never trust it alone with a phone

  The nylon sheds a shower and the zip does not seal, so a phone or a radio goes into a sealed case inside the pouch rather than straight in. Double packing is the only thing that reliably keeps electronics dry in a bag of this kind. For gloves, paperwork and food the pouch alone is fine.
