How to Choose Your Rain Jacket

Understand waterproof vs water-resistant. A truly waterproof jacket uses a membrane (Gore-Tex, eVent, or similar) that blocks rain while allowing moisture vapour to escape. Water-resistant jackets rely on a DWR coating alone — fine for drizzle, not for sustained downpours.

Know your layers. 2-layer jackets bond the membrane to the outer fabric, leaving the inner lining separate — comfortable but bulkier. 2.5-layer adds a protective print instead of a full lining, reducing weight. 3-layer bonds outer fabric, membrane, and inner fabric together — the most durable and packable option for serious hillwalking.

Match the jacket to your activity. For high-output activities like trail running or fast hiking, prioritise breathability (look for pit zips and lightweight fabrics). For wild camping or mountain use, prioritise storm-proof features: a helmet-compatible hood, fully taped seams, and a longer cut for pack-belt coverage.

Check the details. Sealed zips, adjustable cuffs, and a wired peak on the hood make a real difference when conditions deteriorate. Pockets should sit above your pack's hip belt for practical access.
