A sling bag carries on a single strap running diagonally across the back, so the body swings round to the front without coming off the shoulder. What is a sling bag actually for?

What size should a sling bag be?

• Torso length: the strap has to adjust long enough to clear a winter jacket and short enough to sit snug over a T-shirt.

• Opening: a curved zip that runs the length of the panel gives one-handed access; a small top opening does not.
• Padding: a shaped shoulder pad spreads a load that would otherwise sit on a single narrow line of muscle.
• Internal division: one padded sleeve keeps a tablet or a lens from colliding with keys, which matters more than total litres.

Does the MOLLE webbing serve a purpose?

It does when it is used. Rows of stitched webbing let a pouch, a torch holder or a bottle carrier be threaded on and locked down, which turns one bag into several configurations. Left empty, that webbing is decoration that adds a little weight and catches on car seats. Before buying for the loops, decide what will actually hang from them, and check that the panel is stitched to a reinforced face rather than to the outer fabric alone.

How do you wear one so it stays comfortable?

Tighten the strap until the bag sits high on the back, near the shoulder blades. Slung low across the hips it feels casual and swings into the arm on every stride. Alternate shoulders between days, because one strap loads one side. In rain, remember that a single strap bag has a seam and a zip sitting where the water runs, so anything that must stay dry belongs inside a liner or inside one of the waterproof bags made for that job.
