  Two or three nights out: sleeping bag, mat, spare layers, food and a stove, with the outer pockets left for what you want to hand. At this size the honest warning is about filling it. Space invites weight, and the pack you lift at the car is the pack you carry all day.

  Where the strain lands

  On a loaded rucksack it is the hip belt anchor, the top of the shoulder straps and a zip dragged over a stuffed compartment. Load heavy items high and close to your spine, sit the belt on the top of your hips so your legs take the weight, and never force a zip. Line the inside with a dry bag when rain is forecast.
