  What 80 litres of bergen takes

  Sleeping bag, mat, a change of clothing, cooking kit and three days of food fit with room to spare, which is the honest reason to pick 80 litres over 50. The webbing gives you the rest: side pouches for water and a first aid kit, a roll strapped where you can reach it. Anything hanging outside is weight further from your spine, so keep it light.

  Fabric and failure points

  The shell is a 50/50 polyester and nylon blend, finished to resist water while still letting moisture out. Resisting water is not keeping it out: seams and closures let rain through, so line the pack for your sleeping bag. Loaded to 80 litres, the parts that complain are the shoulder strap anchors and any closure you force shut.
