Start with the two numbers

Every binocular is described by a pair like 10x42: the first is magnification, the second the objective lens in millimetres. They set everything that follows:

• Magnification: 8x is wider, steadier and easier to hold; 10x reaches further. Past about 12x you need to brace or use a tripod, so ignore the 20x, 30x and higher "hand-held" claims.
• Objective: bigger gathers more light. A 42mm or 50mm holds up at dawn and dusk; a 25mm compact is a bright-day pair.
• Exit pupil is the objective divided by the magnification. Around 4mm and up stays usable in low light; below 2.5mm dims quickly at dusk. We publish it so you can judge for yourself.

8x42 or 10x42 is the safe default

If you are unsure, a full-size 8x42 or 10x42 is the format that does the most jobs in one pair: enough reach for detail, enough light for dawn and dusk, and a power you can hold steady by hand. Birders often prefer 8x42 for its wide, steady, forgiving view; 10x42 trades a little of that for reach. A 10x50 goes brighter still in low light at the cost of weight.

Glass and build, in plain terms

BAK4 prisms give a brighter, sharper image than BAK7. "Fully multi-coated" (FMC) glass beats "multi-coated" (MC) for light transmission. Nitrogen-filled and sealed bodies resist internal fogging and rain, and we say plainly which pairs are sealed and which the maker states are not. Where a pair carries a camouflage finish, that is a look, not a military specification.
