  What 40 litres actually holds

  Forty litres is the weekend size. A sleeping bag, a change of clothes, three days of food and a jacket go in without a fight. For a working day it is generous: a folder, a flask, a hi-vis and lunch leave most of the compartment empty, which beats cramming a smaller bag until it splays.

  Where the weight should sit

  Use the waist strap. It shifts load off your shoulders onto your hips and stops the pack swinging, and swinging is what works the strap anchors loose over months. Heavy items ride high and against your back. Do not force the zip over an overfilled compartment, because that is the quickest way to lose a slider.
