  Fifty-five litres covers a long weekend without the bulk of an expedition pack. Sleeping bag, cooking kit, two changes of clothing and food for three days go in with space to spare, and the separate compartments keep boots and a wet jacket away from dry kit. MOLLE webbing carries what you want reachable without opening the main sack.

  Loading it so it lasts

  Reinforced Oxford handles scuffing and rough ground, but fabric is rarely what fails. The weak spots on any loaded pack are the hip belt anchors, the stitching at the head of the shoulder straps and a zip forced shut over a bulging pocket. Keep the heaviest items high and tight to your spine, tension the belt on the hip bone before the shoulder straps, and move kit to another compartment rather than fighting a zip.
