  Forty litres, split five ways

  More than five compartments inside 40 litres means small pockets instead of one deep hole, which is the difference between finding a head torch and tipping the bag out on the floor. A ripstop weave keeps a snag to a small hole rather than a run across the panel. The zips are metal, heavier than plastic and less inclined to spread when a compartment is packed hard.

  The harness, plainly

  You get shoulder straps, an adjustable sternum strap and an air mesh panel that rests against your back. There is no hip belt, so nothing transfers weight onto your hips, and no empty weight is quoted. Keep dense items high and near your spine, set the sternum strap before you walk off, and stop filling a pocket once its zip needs pushing.
