  How you inflate it

  There is no pump to carry with this pad and no built-in mechanism to do the work for you. You inflate it yourself through the valve, and a few breaths bring it up to pressure because the air chamber is not large. That keeps the kit simple, with nothing to break or leave behind, though it does mean the effort is on you rather than a pump.

  Pack weight and the air-pad tradeoff

  At 450 g and a packed size of 20 by 10 cm, this pad drops into a daysack for less than a rations pack and barely registers on a long march. The 20D TPU fabric is what keeps it that light, and it holds up to 150 kg. Being an air pad, it is more comfortable than a thin foam mat but it can be punctured, so keep it off sharp ground and well away from a fire. If you want something that cannot puncture at all, a closed-cell foam mat is the safer choice.
