  Comfort in 5cm

  Five centimetres does not sound like much, but on hard ground or hidden stones it makes the difference between a real night's sleep and a restless one. The 200 x 65cm surface gives a good-sized adult room to stretch out, and a pillow is built into the mat so there is one less thing to carry. At 1.7kg it straps to a rucksack without weighing you down, which suits weekend camping, festivals and expedition nights. The PVC-coated polyester pongee has a water-resistant finish that resists damp rising from the ground.

  How the valve works

  This one is a genuine self-inflating design: unfold it, open the ABS valve and it draws in most of its air on its own while you sort the rest of your kit. A few breaths at the end top it up to the firmness you prefer, which is normal rather than a fault. Close the valve and you are set. Choose from Red, Black or Blue.
