  Foam that cannot let you down

  There is no valve and nothing to inflate, so this mat cannot puncture, delaminate or go flat in the night. You unfold it, lie down, and fold it back up when you break camp. The egg-crate grooves trap pockets of air to slow the cold coming up through the ground, and the aluminium backing reflects warmth back at you while keeping damp off the foam. Closed-cell foam is also spark-resistant, which is why it earns a place near a fire.

  The honest trade

  Foam is the buy-it-for-life option: forgiving and impossible to puncture, but thinner and cooler than an air mat, so it suits mild to cool ground rather than hard frost. If you sleep on your side or feel your hips on thin mats, stack a second foam mat or lay it under an air pad for more warmth. At 350g it is one of the lightest ways to get off the ground, and it folds flat to 60 by 17 by 14cm against a bergen. Five colours are on offer.
