  One pack, two jobs

  At 20 litres it works as a daysack: waterproofs, lunch, a flask and a first aid kit for a day out, or a folder, a laptop and a hi-vis vest for a shift. Opened to 35 litres it takes an overnight change of clothing and a sleeping bag as well.

  Use the expansion, not the zip

  Smaller packs give way at the same points as big ones: the top of the shoulder straps, and a zip forced over a compartment that is already stuffed. Open the expansion before you fight the fastening, and keep heavy items high and against your back. Nylon sheds a shower, but it is not sealed, so a liner earns its place.
