  What is padded, and what is not

  The foam sits between you and the bag rather than holding it off your back on a frame, so it takes the edge off hard items and little else on a warm day. With no belt in the listing, your shoulders carry all of it, which makes the load you choose more important than the pack you choose.

  Strapping kit underneath

  The base loops keep bulky, light items out of the main compartment, and that is the right trade: sleeping bag underneath, dense food and water high and close to your spine. Line the inside with a dry bag before rain, since a water-resistant shell still lets water past a zip and a seam.
