  This is base camp and moving kit rather than a day walk: a four-season sleeping bag, a mat, muddy boots in the compartment underneath and clothing for a week. Filled to the top it will weigh more than most people want to walk any distance with, so use the volume as room to pack loosely instead of a target to hit.

  Padding, straps and the honest bit

  The waist and chest straps at the front are webbing that steadies the load, not a padded belt on a frame, and the foam padding sits directly against your back rather than standing off it. No empty weight is quoted for 90 litres. Put the heavy items high and close to your spine, tighten the front straps before you lift, and line the bag for anything that must stay dry.
