  How this mat inflates

  This is a self-inflating mat, not a magic one. Open the valve and the foam core expands and pulls in most of the air on its own while you sort out the rest of your camp. When it stops filling, close the valve and add a few breaths to firm it up to the feel you want. Do not expect it to reach full pressure with zero effort, but you are not standing there blowing it up from flat either.

  Thickness, warmth and who it suits

  The mat inflates to 6 cm, which is enough depth to keep a side sleeper's hip and shoulder off cold, hard ground where a thin foam mat would leave you aching. The hexagonal cells spread your weight and trap air across the full 190 by 58 cm surface, and the 630 g weight rolls down small enough for a bergen or daysack. An air mat is more comfortable than closed-cell foam but can be punctured, so keep it clear of embers and sharp stones, and store it loosely rolled.
