  What 75 litres is for

  Seventy-five litres is a week away or a base camp load, not a day out. It swallows a four season sleeping bag, a tent share, a mat, cooking kit, fuel and food for several days, and still leaves room for a spare fleece. The MOLLE panels hold the awkward shapes, so an axe, a mat or a water carrier travels outside instead of eating volume you need inside.

  Carrying a big pack without breaking it

  The bigger the sack, the more the leverage works against it. Weight sits high and against your spine, never slung low at the back where it pulls you off balance. The hip belt anchors and the top of the shoulder straps carry almost everything, so tension the belt on the hip bone first. Oxford fabric turns light rain, though the zips and seams are not sealed, so use a dry bag for down and spare clothing.
