  Packing it like a suitcase

  The main compartment opens all the way round, so you lay the bag flat and pack in layers instead of digging down a tube. That matters at the end of a wet day, when what you want is at the bottom. Fifty litres covers a night or two out: sleeping bag, mat, food, spare clothing and a stove.

  Compression, and the long zip

  Pull the side straps in once you are packed. A load that cannot shift is a load that is not slowly working the seams, and the same straps take a mat or roll on the outside. The trade-off of a wrap-around opening is a long zip, so never force it over an overstuffed compartment. Heavy items still go high and close to your back.
