  A working day, not an expedition

  Forty litres is a shift and a day out, not a trek. It takes a hi-vis vest, a folder of paperwork, a flask, a spare pair of boots and a rain jacket, with room left over. Pack it for three days on a hill and you will be carrying it badly rather than carrying it well.

  Where 40 litres starts to bite

  There is no load-bearing hip belt, so the whole weight arrives at the top of the shoulder straps. Keep dense items high and against your back rather than at the bottom of the bag, spread the rest around them, and stop before the main zip needs a shove. A forced zip is the second thing to go.
