  What water-resistant means here

  The Oxford carries a water-resistant treatment, so rain beads off and a shower will not reach your kit. The closure is a different story. It is a zip, and a zip is a track, not a seal; the seams are sewn, and a needle leaves holes. Under sustained rain, water arrives through both. Line it with a dry bag for anything that has to stay dry, which is what experienced users do anyway.

  Weight and webbing

  1.2 kg empty is honest for a 49 cm pack with metal zips: the hardware costs grams and buys fastenings that survive daily use. Hang bulky items on the MOLLE webbing to move mass off your spine, though the further out it sits the harder your shoulders work. Keep dense kit inside, high, and against the padded back.
