  Lie across it, not along it

  Sleeping straight down the centre line is what produces the two complaints you read everywhere: shoulders pinched by the sides, and a ridge of fabric running under your spine. Shift onto the diagonal, head towards one corner and feet towards the other, and the nylon opens out flat beneath you. Hang it with some sag rather than pulled tight, because a tight hang deepens the fold.

  Cold below, rain above

  Two things a bare hammock will not do for you. It will not keep you warm underneath, because your sleeping bag is crushed flat by your weight and stops insulating, so use a mat inside or a quilt below. And it will not keep rain off, so a tarp goes over the top. The straps and carabiners are supplied, and the whole thing folds back into its bag.
