  800 g, everything in the bag

  The weight that counts is the total, and 800 g here covers the hammock, the net, the carabiners, the straps, the guy ropes and the pegs. Nothing else is needed. The 210T nylon breathes on a warm night, and the 200 kg rating leaves room for an adult plus a loaded pack. Lie diagonally rather than along the centre line and the fabric opens flat, which is what stops your shoulders being squeezed.

  The net comes off

  In autumn and winter the mosquito net is dead weight, so it unzips and stays at home. In midge season it goes back on and the double zips let you get in from either side. Remember the underside stays cold, because your bag is crushed flat under you: a mat inside or an underquilt below is the answer. Rain needs a tarp.
