  Off the ground, insects outside

  Wild camping in British woodland means wet ground, roots under your hip and midges from May onwards. Hanging solves the first two, and the fine mesh handles the third. Lie across the fabric at an angle rather than along the middle: the surface opens flat under you, which takes the squeeze off your shoulders and removes the ridge on your spine. The 200 kg rating covers an adult and a full pack.

  Two things it will not do

  It will not keep your back warm. The insulation in your bag is crushed under your weight and does nothing underneath, so a mat inside or an underquilt below is the fix. It will not keep rain off either, since a bare hammock is not a shelter. Rig a tarp above, and tie a short loop of cord on each suspension line so water drips off before it reaches you.
