  Water-resistant, closed by zip

  This one shuts with zips rather than a rolled top, and the seams are stitched. That makes it water-resistant: it handles a commute in drizzle and a shower on the trail. It is not sealed. If a laptop or a set of papers has to stay dry through real rain, slide it into a dry bag inside the pack.

  Left flat it works at 20L for the office run. Pulled up, the 15 cm extension takes it to 35L for a night away or a camera kit. Keep the heavy items low and close to your spine once the extension is up, and never force a zip shut on a section packed past its shape.
