  Roll it, buckle it

  Rolling the opening down and buckling it is the part that works: no zip track at the top means no obvious way in, and nothing to jam when your hands are cold. Be realistic about the rest. The panels are sewn together, and thread passes through fabric, so a long spell of rain will find the stitch line eventually. The PVC lining buys you time. A dry bag inside buys you certainty.

  Five hours under load

  Use the chest strap. It stops the shoulder straps sliding outwards, which is what makes a long carry ache and what wears the stitching at the top of each strap. Pack the dense items against the padded back panel and high, and let the side mesh take the bottles rather than the main compartment.
