  A tougher shell for rough pitches

  The Self Inflating Foam Mattress wears a 75 denier pongee polyester shell, a heavier weave than the 30D and 50D you see on budget mats, so it stands up better to branches and gravel underneath. It measures 192 by 67 cm, wide and long enough that taller sleepers are not left hanging off the edge. Open the integrated valve and the foam expands on its own over two to three minutes; finish with a few breaths if you want it firmer.

  Comfort chosen over shaving grams

  At 2.6 kg this is not the lightest option, and that is the trade: 3.5 cm of self-inflating foam and a sturdier fabric instead of chasing every gram. That makes it a better fit for car camping, festivals and base camp than for long fast-and-light hikes. When it is time to leave, the same valve lets the air out quickly so you can roll it down. Store it unrolled with the valve open between trips to keep the foam lofting.
