  A double bed that inflates itself

  Open the valve and the mattress draws in its air on its own, so there is no puffing away after a long hike. To be honest about it, self-inflating gets it most of the way there, and a few breaths finish it to the firmness the two of you prefer. At 196 x 125 x 9 cm it gives a real double surface, with 9 cm of loft to keep hips and shoulders off cold, stony ground for both sleepers rather than a thin token layer.

  Despite covering two people, it weighs just 1.45 kg and handles a load of up to 200 kg, so a couple plus rucksacks sit on it without bottoming out. The 20D nylon carries a TPU coating over pongee fabric that resists ground damp, though it is a sleeping surface rather than a groundsheet, so pitch it on a dry footprint for wet nights.
