  A light bed strung between two trees

  Find two trees, wrap the straps, and you have a bed off the wet floor in a few minutes. The 210T parachute nylon carries up to 200 kg, so an adult with a full pack has nothing to worry about, and the high-density mesh net seals you in against mosquitoes and the small midges that ruin summer nights.   The cold comes from underneath

  Worth saying plainly: a hammock feels colder than the ground on a cool night. Your weight flattens whatever is under you, so the insulation stops working exactly where you need it. The answer is not to avoid the hammock, it is to insulate below you, either with a sleeping mat inside or an underquilt slung underneath. Do that and you stay warm. The first time you pitch it, the net and the straps take a little practice, so set it up once in the garden before you rely on it in the field.
