  Splitting the load front and back

  Detach the chest pack and you carry two smaller volumes rather than one tall one, with the kit you want in daylight on your front. Combined, you sit at the top of the 36 to 55 litre range, enough for a couple of nights away. Set the waist belt on the top of your hips before you tighten the shoulder straps.

  Water-resistant, and what that means

  The nylon carries a water-resistant lining, not a sealed construction. It shrugs off a shower and a bit of abrasion, and it will not hold water out through a long wet walk, because the zips and the stitching are open routes. Put a dry bag inside for a sleeping bag, a change of clothes and the laptop, and the pack carries while the liner seals.
