Off the wet ground, under cover

You hang between two trees, so you sleep above the mud, puddles and cold soil that soak a groundsheet. The 260 x 140 cm body gives you room to lie at a slight diagonal, which flattens your back out and takes the pressure off your spine. The PU-coated tarp pitches over the top at 230 x 140 cm, so pitch it wide enough to cover the whole hang and keep rain off your feet and head. The fine mesh keeps midges and mosquitoes out on summer nights near water or woodland.

    Beat the cold underneath

Here is the honest part: a hammock is colder than the ground because your body squashes any insulation flat under you, so it stops trapping heat. Slide a sleeping mat inside the hammock or hang an underquilt below, and you stay warm through the night. Pitch it once in the garden first, since the net and ridgeline take a little practice, and after that it goes up in a few minutes.
