The problem it is built for

Under your own weight a sleeping bag is squashed flat, and the loft that keeps you warm disappears wherever your body presses on it. That is why a hammock feels cold in the back and legs first. An underquilt hangs outside the hammock, below the fabric, so nothing compresses it and the hollow cotton fill keeps its thickness while you sleep.

Fitting it and carrying it

Thirteen adjustment points pull it up against the underside of the hammock, which is the part that counts, because a gap between quilt and fabric lets air move through. The same loops close the sides down against wind. Off the hammock it becomes a poncho or a blanket, and it goes back into the bag supplied.
