  What the roll-top does

  Rolling the top down and clipping it removes the opening a zip leaves behind, which is where most packs let water in first. The coated panels shed the rest. The seams here are stitched rather than welded, so under sustained rain the needle holes stay the point where water can pass. Put a dry bag around anything that must stay dry.

  Carrying it

  The padded back panel is built to breathe, which counts on a climb where a coated pack traps heat against you. Roll the top at least three turns before clipping it, keep dense kit high and against your spine, and use the side zip at a stop instead of unrolling everything in the wet.
