  Water-resistant, not sealed

  The Oxford outer is treated, so rain sits on the surface and runs off instead of soaking in, with a nylon lining behind it. Treated is not sealed, though. The seams are sewn and the closure is not a rolled one, so a long day of rain will get past both in the end. Keep anything that cannot get damp in a dry bag inside; it costs little and it settles the question.

  How the volume behaves

  A rucksack that swells from 20 to 35 litres is useful and slightly awkward: pack it light and it stays narrow, pack it full and it grows outwards. Load the weight high and close to your spine either way, and let the curved straps sit flat rather than digging in.
