  How the top closes

  You fold the opening over on itself three times and clip it down. That closure keeps rain out of the main compartment, and it works better the more you can roll, so leave a hand's width of slack rather than filling all 35 litres to the brim. The PVC shell sheds water on its own.

  A 52 by 28 centimetre body takes a sleeping bag, a stove and a change of clothes without a struggle, which is a night or two out rather than a week. The padded panel, wide mesh straps, chest strap and waist strap hold that load steady. Keep whatever must stay dry deep in the rolled section.
