  An 18 litre day size, and nothing more

  Eighteen litres holds a shell jacket, a litre of water, lunch and a small first aid kit. It does not hold a sleeping bag, and the harness makes no claim otherwise: a 3D back panel and padded mesh straps, with no hip belt to move weight onto your hips. Keep the load light and it stays comfortable for a day on a footpath.

  What it does well

  The chest strap and its anti-slip buckle earn their place on a steep pull, holding the straps in position instead of letting them slide outwards. Water-repellent nylon copes with a passing shower, while seams and zips stay open, so a phone or a map belongs in a dry bag.
