  How the MOLLE works, and what it costs you

  The webbing is horizontal strips stitched down at intervals, so each row gives a ladder of loops. The straps on a pouch weave alternately through those loops and its own bar, then fasten flat, so it stays put instead of swinging. The catch is physics: anything hung outside sits away from your spine, and the further that mass sits, the harder it pulls you backwards. Use the webbing for light bulk you want to reach fast, and keep dense weight inside and high.

  At 25 litres it is a day bag. Open the expansion and it takes an overnight load. The Oxford outer and nylon lining handle mud and branches, resist splashes and dust, and are not sealed against steady rain.
