  Where the 700 grams went

  Seven hundred grams for 22 litres is not the light end of the category, and the back panel is the reason. You get a padded panel and a 3D mesh layer that holds the fabric off your spine, which is what keeps a warm ascent from soaking your shirt. A stripped down sack saves you a few hundred grams and hands that back.

  The opening at the top

  The hydration outlet is a port through the fabric and the specification describes no flap over it. In steady rain water has a way in, so run the tube, then bag anything that must stay dry. The coating copes with spray; nothing about the seams or zips is sealed.
