  Where a light pack gives way

  Rarely the fabric. It is the stitching around the strap anchors, and a zip forced shut on a compartment stuffed past its 22 litres. Reinforced seams and a YKK zip answer both, which counts for more on a small pack than another gram saved. Load heavy items high and against your spine, and never lean on a closure to shut it.

  The harness, described plainly

  Padded shoulder straps, a back panel of breathable mesh holding air between you and the load, and a waist strap. The waist strap steadies the pack. It does not carry weight onto your hips the way a padded belt would. For a day out with water, lunch and a shell layer that is enough harness. For 15 kilos over two days it is not.
