  Off the cold ground without the weight

  A foam roll mat does one job well, it puts a layer between you and cold, damp, uneven ground. This one uses closed-cell XPE foam, so it will not soak up water the way an open sponge pad does, and the aluminium film on the underside reflects some of your body heat back up instead of letting it drain into the floor. At 550g it barely registers in a pack, and the egg-groove surface adds a little give under your hips and shoulders. It is a mat, not a sprung mattress, so set your expectations there.

  The mat rolls down to 61 x 15.5 x 13cm, which straps to the outside of a bergen or drops into a car boot without an argument. There is nothing to inflate and nothing to break, you unroll it and lie down. Pick from Orange, Blue or Green. If you sleep cold or on hard ground a lot, many people run a foam mat like this under an inflatable pad for extra insulation.
