  Three days without a resupply

  Fifty litres takes a sleeping bag, a mat on the outside straps, two changes of clothing, a stove and three days of food. Pack the dense items high and against your spine so the weight sits over your hips rather than hanging behind you, and cinch the side straps before you drop off a steep step.

  Oxford polyester in the wet

  The coated weave turns rain for a while; the stitching and the zips do not. A liner inside the main compartment keeps a sleeping bag dry, which matters more than anything else you carry. The back panel sits flat against you rather than on a frame, so expect a warm back on a long climb.
